The Small Steps for Big Changes program was originally developed in Canada and created in response to research showing that practical, achievable lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Following strong evidence from Canadian trials, SSBC is currently being evaluated as part of a funded research trial to understand how well it works in an Australian context.
You’ll meet one-on-one with a trained SSBC health coach for six sessions across 4-6 weeks. Your coach will help you set goals that fit your life, your schedule, and what matters most to you. You will also do supervised, tailored exercise.
SSBC is offered through four Y QLD sites, and one community-clinic site across South East Queensland, making it easy to join a program in a welcoming and familiar community space.
SSBC is not about strict rules or fast results. It’s about making small changes you can stick with over time to support your long-term health. You will complete surveys and simple physical assessments to measure progress over time.
SSBC was developed at the University of British Columbia by the Diabetes Prevention Research Group using proven strategies to help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. It is being evaluated in Australia by The University of Queensland.
